Cake and Barbie

Strange how my last few posts (and those of others) just seem to be saturated with screwed-up girliness. I never considered myself a girly girl, but I guess its part of me. As they say, you are what you eat, like, wear... your taste truly does reveal who you are.

I did have a few Barbies when i was little, I wasn't obsessed with the dolls per se, it was more the idea of acting out a story with costumes (or sometimes no costumes), sets, personalities etc. I do find it funny to look at the Barbie phenomenon, the relatively recent media hype surrounding her birthday, with the designer collaborations etc and think that this doll, considered by me to have been a mere plaything, epitomises notions of the 'ideal' woman - ideals which do not fit with reality and plague/anger many girls to this day. I do also faintly remember having a Barbie doll cake at pre-school (although i think it may actually have been one of the cheaper made in china incarnations). A fairy princess with a jam and sponge skirt, puffy pink and white marshmallow and coconut topping and silver cachous gleaming to the delight of all.

While I still do appreciate a touch of kitschy frothy fairytale, I would probably say I am slightly more serious and possibly a little bit wiser/cynical/critical these days and it's great to see the 'classics' reinterpreted. Why have boring old cake when you can make it fantastic, amazing, funny. Who doesn't like a doll in a cake?

I caught sight of this on susie bubble's website and was lead to a fascinating trail of cakey crumbs..

Claire of The Kitchy Kitchen seems to be a prolific and very talented creator of these couture cakes.

Molly Bakes also seems to be on trend - cue the 'bog cake' designed by Piers Atkinson (who has also done work or Lady Gaga and topshop)

and the 'slutty cake' done in collaboration with wig maker, hair stylist, fashion designer Charlie Le Mindu.
